Pet Wellness Exams in Greenville, NC
Wellness pet exams have two main purposes: To establish baseline health and to detect underlying signs of disease. Our veterinarians use their expertise as well as veterinary diagnostic tools to perform a thorough evaluation of your pet’s health. We’ll tailor each pet exam to meet your pet’s unique needs as well as address your personal concerns.
Some of the services we perform during an annual wellness exam include:
- A nose-to-tail physical
- Weight check and body condition score
- Fecal exam
- Age-appropriate bloodwork
- Vaccinations, if due
- Prescription for parasite prevention
- Heartworm test (for dogs)
- Tick-borne illness disease screening
- Urinalysis, if needed
- Nutritional counseling, if needed
- Behavioral counseling, if needed
Why Parasite Prevention is Needed All Year Round
During your pet’s annual exam, parasite prevention is an essential topic of discussion. Parasites such as fleas, ticks, and heartworms (transmitted by mosquitoes) are a real threat to your pet’s health, and are especially prevalent in North Carolina’s mild climate. Fleas can cause an allergic reaction in sensitive pets and can also transmit Bartonella or “cat scratch disease.”
Ticks are known to transmit Lyme disease, anaplasmosis, and ehrlichiosis to us and our pets. And finally, heartworms can cause heartworm disease, which is hard to detect and can be fatal if left untreated.
At Animal Care Veterinary Hospital, we highly recommend year-round parasite prevention to keep your pets healthy and safe from these dangerous critters. At your annual exam, we’ll talk to you about parasite prevention options for your pet to make sure they have the best protection.
