Dr. Brett Swan Medical Director

Dr. Swan is a native of New Jersey. His passion for animals started at a young age, and he started his career working with animals as the head veterinary technician at a hospital in NJ. Dr. Swan decided to pursue animal medicine and attended Iowa State University College of Veterinary Medicine, where he received his Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine, in 2012. After graduation, Dr. Swan returned to New Jersey to practice high-quality medicine in a state of the art, progressive practice.

After 8 years at this facility, he decided to move to North Carolina for a better quality of life with his wife, two sons and his dog, Tyson. His passion and dedication to his clients are his main priority as he starts his new journey with us. Dr. Swan believes in patient care to the highest standard. His veterinary interests include cytology, internal medicine, and dermatology. He is a member of the AVMA, NCVMA, and AAHA.

Dr. Swan’s interests outside of work include spending time with his family, fishing, exercising, and spending as much time at the beach as possible.


Ashley Richards Practice Manager

Ashley has worked in the veterinary field since 2009. She earned her associate's degree in veterinary technology from the Vet Tech Institute in Pittsburgh, PA. Ashley was a licensed veterinary technician for six years before becoming a practice manager. Previously, Ashley has lived in Williamsburg, VA and managed an 24/7 emergency hospital. She moved to North Carolina for the opportunity to open Animal Care Veterinary Hospital. Ashley has a terrier mix, Jasper, and two cats, Darcy and Brady. When not at work, Ashley enjoys hiking, reading, and traveling.


Kristen Veterinary Assistant, Marketing Coordinator

Kristen has worked in the veterinary field for the past four years. She recently moved from New Jersey to join our Animal Care family. Kristen is working towards her Fear Free certification so she can help nervous pets have a better experience during vet visits. Kristen spends her time off hiking with her dog Kona. Her cat, Tallulah, opts to stay home and sunbathe.


Jenn Veterinary Assistant, Core Trainer

Jenn graduated with her Bachelors degree in Animal Sciences from Penn State in 2014. In 2018, she completed her certification as a Fear Free veterinary professional, striving to make each visit a positive and low-stress experience for both pets and their owners. Jenn joined our team as a veterinary assistant; client education and being an advocate for patient care are her favorite aspects of working in the field.

A die-hard animal lover, Jenn's family home always had animals running around from dogs and cats to pocket pets and backyard rabbits and chickens. Outside of work, she enjoys spending time outdoors and finding new adventures with her boyfriend, Matthew, and her pup, Ginger (the best dog ever!), playing strategy board games and attending music festivals.


Mae Veterinary Assistant

Mae has been involved in the field of animal welfare since 2010.  She moved to North Carolina in March 2021 from Washington state, where she spent seven years working with non-profit animal welfare organizations.  In 2014 - 2017, she worked as an Adoption Counselor for her local Humane Society. There she specialized in feral cat behavior and managed their rabbit and small mammal program.  She fulfilled a year-long internship with One Heart Wild Education Sanctuary, where she worked with special needs rescue horses and farm animals and assisted with on-site programs for children.  She studied Fundraising Management at the University of Washington - Tacoma and raised over $40,000 for local animal welfare organizations.  Mae currently has two rescue cats, Apple and Cupid.  In her free time, Mae enjoys mountaineering, cooking, and playing music.


Tristyn Veterinary Assistant

Tristyn is originally from Charlotte, NC and is currently a student at ECU obtaining a Bachelor's degree in Biology. She aspires to continue her education in pursuit of becoming a Small Animal Veterinarian. She has a 6-year-old Chihuahua mix named Leah and a tri-pod kitten Sushi! In her free time, Tristyn enjoys hiking and participating in 5k's.


Andrew Registered Veterinary Technician

Andrew joined our team in June 2021. He graduated from Asheville-Buncombe Tech and became a Registered Veterinary Technician. Andrew biggest surgery in the veterinary field is surgery. On his days off, Andrew loves watching sports, and spending time with his 2-year-old son, Levi, and 3-year-old hound mix, Ecco.
